GTA 6 File Size Compared to RDR2, GTA 5

GTA 6 File Size Compared to RDR2, GTA 5

GTA 6 is shaping up to be Rockstar's most ambitious title yet. With its hyper-realistic open world and intricate detail, the game is expected to require massive storage space, likely surpassing the file sizes of both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Joshua started at GameRant in 2017 where he fell in love with a company that supports creativity, treats video games with the respect they deserve, and is complete with people whose passions match his. It's this passion he hopes to communicate in every post, in every conversation about the industry, and so forth. Outside of gaming and GameRant, Joshua spends a lot of time with his lovely wife and children, keeps pulling for Cody Rhodes in WWE, and manages the farm he inherited from his grandfather. If you name a video game, Joshua can rant about it—that's a guarantee. Sign in to your GameRant account GTA 6 is already shaping up to be Rockstar Games' biggest and most ambitious release, and its enormous open world could come with an equally enormous storage requirement. Rockstar has spent years developing its open-world map of Vice City, building on the technology and attention to detail that helped make Red Dead Redemption 2 one of the most immersive games ever released. From the crowded streets of Vice City to the wildlife in its swamps and waterways, every aspect of GTA 6 is designed with realism and immersion in mind.Of course, all that additional detail has to go somewhere, and modern games are becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to storage space. High-resolution textures, detailed character models, animations, audio files, and enormous environments can contribute to substantial downloads, even with the compression technologies available on current-generation consoles. GTA 6 is particularly interesting in this regard, given the massive technological leap between its predecessor and Rockstar's latest project. GTA 6 File Size vs. RDR2 and GTA 5 on PS5 GTA 6 210 GBs RDR2 111-116 GBs GTA 5 87-104 GBs GTA 6 has a download size of 210 GB for its standard edition on PlayStation 5, making the open-world crime game substantially larger than Rockstar's previous releases. GTA 5 currently requires approximately 87 GB to 104 GB on PS5, depending on the installed content and updates. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2 typically occupies around 111 GB to 116 GB. At 210 GB, GTA 6 would require more than twice the storage of some GTA 5 installations and nearly double that of Red Dead Redemption 2. Find the odd one out before the timer hits zero. Those comparisons are particularly interesting when considering how Rockstar has approached realism and immersion in GTA 6. The developer has already detailed improvements to NPC behavior, wildlife, character animations, and the sheer density of Vice City's environments. There are also hundreds of enterable interiors, an expanded range of activities, and more complex interactions with the world. None of these features individually explain the reported 210 GB download, but together they illustrate why GTA 6 could require considerably more storage than its predecessors. Rockstar has already confirmed that GTA 6's map is bigger than GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, with the map reportedly twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the playable area of RDR2. That makes the reported 210 GB file size easier to understand, especially given the reported depth of GTA 6. However, file size isn't necessarily proportional to map size, and it doesn't mean the developer has neglected compression. With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, players won't have much longer to wait for confirmation. Preloading begins November 12, giving PS5 and Xbox Series X owners a full week to download the game before release. The reported 210 GB requirement would consume nearly a third of the usable storage on an original PS5, potentially forcing players to uninstall other games or make room on an expansion SSD. The Xbox file size also remains unconfirmed, and launch updates could change the final storage requirements.
